Can anyone recommend me a digital camera?

I am hoping there are some (photo) gadget enthusiasts/techies amongst you and i would like some recommendations in purchasing a digital camera.
I know some of you will own rather nifty and cool digital cameras so i'm hoping you can give me your recommendations.

Basically i'm a newbie because i've never owned a digital camera before, never had the need to but realised i do need a separate camera for taking photos and video (of family and friends/nights out/concerts/shows, etc).
