Security on a smarphone

Hi, I have a Htc Incredible . Even before the news broke recently regarding the tracking and security of smartphones, this has been an issue. I tether my laptop sometimes with my phone releasing personal and financial information. I have seen apps like McAfee, Norton and others. Should I download a security suite and if so, what would you recommend?
Thanks, Tony

There is no known way to leak over a tether or data connection beyond the normal ways ie. you are leaking the old fashioned ways.

For now, take Grif's advice for a few second opinion scans -> Then Please Try This.. - CNET Spyware, viruses, & security Forums

Thanks Bob, that is really a relief that I can't leak info while tethering or just using the internet on my phone! Thanks for the link.

Bob that was lengthy but very informative, I just hope ypu are right. According to the news, big brother is everywhere!

Thanks, Tony

The link I provided was to cover the PC.

Using the internet on my phone could mean using that browser or other apps. To discuss that leak, we'd have to discuss that any browser must leak a little information such as your IP (even that is transitory) and what ever information you voluntarily give out.

I think you have the voluntary info in clear view. It's those other leaks that bother us. For example, APPS can leak more than folk expected. For now, don't be hasty and install an app if you can avoid it.

iPhone 4 vs Evo 4G

Guys i have a question and i will appreciate honest unbiased answers.

I have an iPhone 4 and also had the iPhone 3G, but lately i got sick of the horrible service of ATT (my calls are dropped all the time in my own house). At the same time my wife have sprint and just got an EVO 4G which i have to admit does look cool and seems like a great phone

I can switch easily to sprint, get a discount for the phone (evo ) and keep my number but my question is what are the differences between the iphone and the evo, i know the evo will have much better service (probably anything will have better service then att) and the price is much better but i'm more interested in phone functionality, what can the evo do that the iphone cant? what can the iphone do that the evo cant?

any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Reply 1 : iPhone 4 vs Evo 4G

Essentially the basic features of the phones would be the same, it is just a different operating system and a different way of doing things. Obviously the EVO 4G won't use the Apple iTunes site to download applications, music, etc. but would have a different source to do the same thing. I don't think that one particular device is better than the other, but you cannot use an iPhone on Sprint currently.

Feel free to ask additional questions for more feedback.

I thought, hmm. I bet someone is syncing their Evo 4G with iTunes.

Yup!

I agree with birdmant that in virtually all aspects of functionality they will be equal. And any problem you run into changing (like syncing itunes or video skype) there's always an app that can help you work around. Another option if you like your iphone and don't want to get rid of it is Verizon. They actually have slightly better coverage than sprint in most areas; however, you will pay a bit more because of all the hidden fees to use the complete functionality of your smartphones. There's also a good chance that Sprint will have the iphone by the end of the year also. I'm not sure if you can root an iphone (or if you'd want to) but I love free wireless tethering abilities with my droid. Verizon also now has the Thunderbolt which is basically the evo for verizon. Actually there are a lot of options on the market for you right now and a lot of your decision making will have to do with what you like to do with the phone. There are also 3rd party coverage websites out there that can help you decide from current users which service will be the best in the areas you frequent most often.
My neighbor was in the same predicament as you before verizon started carrying iphones and decided to try the evo for a week but decided it was too much of a hassle trying to get used to a new operating system.
Best of Luck!

DISPLAY:
i4: 3.5 inch with 960 x 640 pixel
EVO: 4.3 inch screen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution

Weight:
i4: 4.8 ounces
EVO: 6 ounces

Cellular network:
i4: 3G
EVO: 4G

Memory:
i4: 16 or 32 GB flash drive
EVO: 8 GB microSD card included, supports up to 32 GB.

That's just some of the spec's.

The size is similar and the network differs from 3G and 4G.

Gingerbread Droid X and Droid 2

Verizon has it and should be pushing the Gingerbread 2.3.3 update for the Droid X and Droid 2.

TBH leaked a build yesterday, I'm sure Verizon will not be far behind, or so we hope, lol

Just to give you an idea of what to expect;

Latest quadrant score Droid X Gingerbread 2320 @ 1.3ghz stable so far.

I kept hearing April, but haven't seen anymore on it. Anyone see any news I've missed?

Reply 3 : Gingerbread Droid X and Droid 2

According to this article http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/04/12/happening-now-droid-x-gingerbread-update-brings-a-new-bootloader-kills-root-access/, Gingerbread is being rolled out to the Droid X right now.

That being said, I tried to see if I could download it (Settings/About Phone/System Updates) and was told my device is up to date though it's still running Froyo. So maybe this is just a stealth update.

Reply 4 : Gingerbread Droid X and Droid 2

Thanks for that info, but the link didn't work for me. I checked for updates yesterday on mine as well.

Reply 5 : Gingerbread Droid X and Droid 2

There is a new leak thats out, with that said I guess the OTA release is rolling out just not very fast

Reply 6 : Gingerbread Droid X and Droid 2

Man, you guys are lucky!
I just got the FROYO update for my Captivate and I can't wait for Gingerbread.

Do you guys know any major changes from FROYO to Gingerbread?

Best international smart phone

Blackberry user wants to switch to an iPhone or Android smartphone. Travel internationally and work through corporate Exchange Server. Need quick, economical and easy access to voice, email, contacts, calendar. What's the best choice?

Reply 1 : Best international smart phone

Are we comparing to satellite phones? If so, old ATT has this at http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/affordable-world-packages.jsp

Reply 2 : Best international smart phone

It was odd actually- this time around I did not have to do the hand holding when she switched from using a BB for five years to the iPhone 4 w/ ATT. Very nice transition with no glitches that I am aware of. Her needs essentially mirrored yours. My brother in law did the same thing- BB -> iPhone 4. He travels internationally once or twice each month, FWIW. Lack of a physical keyboard was not the deal breaker for each of them that I thought it might be.

help me to understand

At first I"ve seen a strange thing : www.micro-fa.com . Is it really or deception ?

Reply 1 : help me to understand

The 'patent' shows it was issued in Estonia in 2005. Obviously, it didn't yet reach the break-through stage, if nobody ever heard from it. Which makes it very doubtful if it's of more value than any other magic device, apart from working as a placebo if you believe in it.

This may be spam by the maker, because he posted in other forums also. For example, see http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=201181

The answer given there is worth repeating:
"Never heard of it, And the site looks dubious. The content is very vague and doesn't really say what it does. Sounds more like those magnetic wristbands."

With google linking to these negative reviews I doubt of this SEO-thing (post your url whereever you can and hope for the best) will have a positive influence on the business.

sharing one Palm Desktop file between two computers

I have one Palm device connected to my computer running XP Pro. I would like my wife's computer (XP Home) to see the same Palm Desktop file so that she can make changes to it and update it with things I need to know.

I've shared the PalmOne folder, but when I try to access it from her machine, I'm informed that the file is in use by another user. The Palm Desktop file was not active on my machine at the time, though the HotSync Manager was active in the systray.

I then searched in these forums for advice on the matter, and found several people who have the same issue as I, but there were no solutions posted to those threads.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Reply 1 : sharing one Palm Desktop file between two computers

The Palm Desktop was not written to handle this requirement. Sorry, you need to look at sync applications or replace that software.

Bob

Reply 2 : sharing one Palm Desktop file between two computers

ok ... so what would you suggest? I don't know what software might be able to do this; the only one I'm aware of is ACT and that's a commercial product.

And to the best of my knowledge, the only software that will talk to a Palm is the Palm Desktop, as provided by PalmOne.

Reply 3 : sharing one Palm Desktop file between two computers

It syncs my outlook with my palm. Since I can have an Exchange Server, that can be sync'd as well.

Sorry, but there are far too many solutions out there so you get to decide what to try and if you are willing to pay.

Greetings,

I've successfully linked my Palm Desktop 4.1.4 (the version shouldn't matter) software between both my Notebook and my Netbook.

How?

Due to a wonderful, FREE programme from Microsoft. Check out http://nyti.ms/9TsYzV .
